Kyiv's power plants will keep operating at full capacity after gas was bought from a private supplier.
Naftogaz of Ukraine said the unstable gas supply to Kyiv facilities had been resolved and everything was now running normally: the Kyiv City State Administration (KMDA) managed to buy a volume of gas from one of the private suppliers operating on the Ukrainian market.
The company's press office also said the gas purchased would be enough to keep the thermal power plants fully running until the gas debt situation is settled. The debts built up while the plants were operated by Kyivenergo.
The Cabinet of Ministers has also raised the question of a long-term solution. The President of Ukraine instructed officials to do everything possible to restore gas supplies to state-owned facilities in Kyiv on preferential terms, without breaching the law.
Naftogaz said it was ready to comply with the legal requirements relating to the accumulated debts and late payments. The company said it was prepared to start supplying gas to the plants and businesses of Kyiv shortly. Supplies will be made on a lawful basis.
Had Naftogaz of Ukraine made the slightest mistake or failed to deliver the required volumes of gas to the plants on the night of 31 July to 1 August, the power supply would have been cut off completely. Kyiv residents would have been left without electricity in hot weather, when air conditioners are in heavy use.
