Old Beskyd railway tunnel to be mothballed

The old Beskyd tunnel is to be mothballed

The Uzhhorod railway directorate is considering mothballing the railway tunnel.

Lviv Railway staff have started mothballing the old single-track Beskyd tunnel. The tunnel was in service for more than 100 years, so it can no longer be considered safe.

The tunnel's management said the overhead contact lines will be dismantled first, the signalling equipment removed next, and the track taken up at the final stage. The track will be dismantled by the Uzhhorod track machine station.

The large new Beskyd tunnel was officially opened on 4 May. It is part of an international transport corridor running through Italy, Hungary and Slovakia. Most of the tunnel lies under a pass in the Carpathians. In 2007 the old tunnel was declared unsafe, and a decision was taken to build a new one nearby.

The new double-track tunnel is 1,765 m long, 10.5 m wide and 8.5 m high. At its deepest point it lies 180 m below the surface of the Beskyd ridge.

The tunnel cost UAH 2.2 billion in total, of which UAH 1.5 billion went on construction and installation work.

In June 2011 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued an order allocating 6.19 hectares of land to Lviv Railway to build and fit out the tunnel.
